The Industrial Application team of Agile Robots is looking for a motivated Intern (m/f/d) Vision Software Development to support the development, testing, and commissioning of industrial vision systems for robotic and AGV applications. In this full-time internship, you will work hands-on across the entire lifecycle of our vision solutions — from software development and camera calibration at our Munich headquarters to on-site commissioning at customer production sites.
Intern (m/f/d) Vision Software Development
Germany, Munich (HQ)
Full-time
Intern / Student
About the role
Your Responsibilities
- Vision Software Development: Develop, test, and maintain software components for industrial 2D/3D vision systems, including API-based secondary development on top of vision vendor SDKs.
- Camera Setup & Calibration: Configure and calibrate 2D area-scan/line-scan cameras and 3D sensors for robotic and AGV applications, performing nine-point, checkerboard, and 3D hand-eye calibrations.
- Algorithm Debugging: Support the debugging and tuning of core vision algorithms, from QR-code and natural-contour (V-SLAM) AGV navigation to deep-learning-based detection models.
- Testing & Automation: Write Python scripts for automated testing and data-log analysis, and validate vision system performance in the lab and in production-like environments.
- System Integration: Configure and troubleshoot data exchange between vision industrial PCs (IPCs) and PLCs, supporting communication via TCP/IP sockets, Modbus TCP, and ROS/ROS2.
- On-Site Commissioning: Travel to customer sites to install, commission, fine-tune, and troubleshoot vision systems on real production lines.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with robotics, software, and application engineers to integrate vision solutions into end-to-end robotic systems.
Essential Skills
- Education: Ongoing Bachelor's or Master's studies in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Automation, or a related field (or recently graduated).
- Camera Hardware & Calibration: Hands-on experience configuring and calibrating mainstream 2D area-scan/line-scan cameras (e.g.Basler) and 3D sensors (e.g.Intel RealSense, structured-light cameras), including nine-point, checkerboard, and 3D hand-eye calibration.
- Vision Algorithms: Understanding of the underlying logic of vision-based AGV navigation — QR-code navigation and natural-contour navigation (V-SLAM) — as well as the deployment of deep-learning-based detection models (e.g.the YOLO series).
- Programming & Scripting: Good C++ and Python programming skills, with the ability to make API calls and perform simple secondary development based on vision vendor SDKs; proficient in Python for automated test scripts and data-log processing; comfortable working in Linux (Ubuntu) environments.
- Industrial Communication: Ability to configure data exchange between vision IPCs and PLCs; understanding of TCP/IP socket communication, Modbus TCP, and ROS/ROS2 inter-node communication.
- Learning Mindset: High motivation and curiosity to quickly learn new technologies, tools, and industrial vision applications.
- Willingness to Travel: Willingness to travel to customer sites (domestic and international) for on-site commissioning activities.
- Communication: Good communication skills in English/German and the ability to work hands-on in an international team.
Beneficial Skills
- Commissioning Experience: First hands-on experience with on-site commissioning, installation, or servicing of vision systems, AGVs, robots, or other industrial automation equipment.
- Vision Libraries: Familiarity with open-source frameworks such as OpenCV or PCL (Point Cloud Library).
- Fieldbus Protocols: Exposure to further industrial communication standards such as PROFINET or EtherCAT.
- Development Tools: Experience with Git, CMake, or Docker.
- Languages: Chinese language skills are a plus.
